Child Health and Disability Prevention (CHDP)

Child Health and Disability Prevention (CHDP) Program is a Federal and State preventive health care program that provides free health check-ups for infants, children, teens, and young adults in low-income families. CHDP helps identify and prevent health problems; links people with treatment, education, and support services when needed; and encourages families to seek preventive health care.

Who is eligible?

  • Low-income children under age 19 who are not eligible for no-cost (free) Medi-Cal
  • Medi-Cal participants (with a share of cost) from birth to age 21
  • Children in Head Start and State preschool programs

    What benefits are covered?

  • CHDP offers preventive care services based on an age schedule.
  • CHDP health check-ups include complete medical and developmental history, unclothed physical exam, vision test, hearing test, nutrition check, immunizations, urine, blood lead, and tuberculosis screening tests, lab tests as needed, health information, and dental screening.
  • Problems found during screening must be followed-up using treatment funds available in each county. This may mean switching to another doctor or clinic for treatment.
  • Other services include smoking cessation (to quit smoking), transportation information, help making appointments, doctor referrals, and dentist referrals.
